“Bad Reputation” is the self-consciously transgressive title of the performance artist and political activist Penny Arcade’s book of interviews, essays, and documentation of her works, but since when was Penny Arcade shy about rubbing our faces in her outlaw status? Born Susana Ventura in 1950, Arcade was a runaway at thirteen, and at sixteen had graduated from reform school. By the time she was nineteen, she had performed at the Playhouse of the Ridiculous in New York, been taken up by the avant-garde artist Jackie Curtis, and hung around that clubhouse filled with privileged dropouts, Andy Warhol’s Factory. Working class, ethnic, and not model tall, Arcade was the other New York City girl: hardworking and obscure, with a considerable chip on her shoulder, all of which she transformed into art. Her primary subject has always been herself, and the will it took to crack Manhattan’s class-conscious art scene. Once installed, though, Arcade never relaxed. She continues to critique the very world that now considers her a legend.

Prayers for my mama Rosemarie (Roeschen)

March 20, 2010

Dear loved ones,

My beloved mama Roeschen - or as she prefers being called now- Rosemarie is in the hospital since Thursday, which I just found out yesterday. It is not yet certain what happened but she might have had a stroke. She had pain in her right arm and couldn’t hold anything in that hand and her speech is slowed down. Luckily I reached her in the hospital in Germany and spoke to her shortly- definitely feeling her vulnerability.
I have been sending her love and prayers - feeling her in my heart and ask for your prayers as well. She is in Essen, Germany. It is hard to be far away right now and I know she also feels me yet I would like to be closer to support her.
Thank you all - much love and spring blessings -Nicki

re: Tips for Legally Posting Signs on Public Property

How does this sound for the email to the Dept. of Public Works in S.F. ....?

----------------

To whom it may concern,

We left a message about the City of S.F. codes regarding the posting of signs on public property, and wanted to follow up on that voicemail. We put up fliers in San Francisco on a regular basis, and we follow religiously the guidelines laid out in the city codes and summarized in your online publication: "Tips for Legally Posting Signs on Public Property" http://www.sfgov.org/site/sfdpw_page.asp?id=111916

But we have encountered, now probably a half dozen times, DPW workers on the streets tearing down all the fliers posted on the poles, whether they have been posted in accordance with city codes or not. When we asked them about this, they told us that their supervisors tell them to take down every flier they see, that their supervisors told them that it is "graffiti". Is this official DPW policy? And if so, how do you explain the clear conflict between what the official city codes say, what your website advises people regarding the posting of fliers, and what the DPW supervisors are telling their crews. Please let us know! Thanks!

Re: POW! ACTION art festival 2010 call for artists!

POW! POW! POW! 2010 ACTION art festival wants some ACTION!

“The most radical Arts Festival I have experienced in San Francisco in many years”. Performance artist Guillermo Gomez Peña, commenting about POW!POW! 2009.

If you have a low tech body-based or time-based performance piece that is risky, outrageous, provoking and/or adventurous we are looking for YOU!…it just has to be pinche good!

POW!POW!POW!, the 3rd annual ACTION art festival in San Francisco is searching for fresh and original "cutting-edgy" action art works for 2010.

Are you willing to take more risks in your performances? Is there any performance/action art piece you always wanted to do, but couldn’t, because it didn’t fit into your funding organization’s agenda? Did you limit your artistic vision because you thought it might "offend" your PC grandmother or someone else? If so, your prayers have been answered! POW! POW! POW! 3rd annual ACTION art festival opens a free expression space for ANY kind of performance art!

About the festival:
The only festival of its type, POW! POW! POW! encourages and supports performance artists to do…whatever they want! Unlike other funded festivals, POW! POW! POW! is a grass roots open-ended festival run by artists and for artists themselves. Triple POW! believes in radical and FREE expression and experimentation with no particular aesthetic, moral, political or social limitations. Since we are not funded, there are "no strings attached."

In the spring of 2008 the first POW! mini-performance art festival was a huge success. We received press in the San Francisco Chronicle and numerous other local publications. In 2009 POW! POW! sold out every night (the audience tripled from 2008) and received press from local publications. The 2010 version promises to take the festival to a new level of national and international recognition.

Selected works will be performed at a well-known performance venue (TBA) in San Francisco, California during our 3rd Annual ACTION art festival on October14th-17th, 2010.

What we ARE looking for:
-Artists willing to speak up and talk back and who are not afraid to express themselves freely
-Low tech or no tech, original, out of the box, risky, outrageous, provoking, adventurous, creative action work based on action and the human body… your imagination is the limit. (The curatorial criteria is originality not “quality”!)

You may submit:
- Continuous installations (preferably interactive), no more than 4 hours in length
- 20 minute or less live performance pieces
- Video action art pieces

What POW!POW!POW! DOES NOT want to view:
Anything that looks like conventional theater, dance, choreography, music or media work. If this is what you make, there are already hundreds of venues and festivals you can submit your work to.

The co- founders/curators/directors/producers of the festival are:
gal*in_dog AKA Guillermo Galindo
Alyssa Lee (of group A)
Guest curator:
Guillermo Gomez Peña
